3M™ Random Orbital Sanding Basics: Episode 1
Dan Bygd, Senior Technical Services Engineer, talks about selecting the right random orbital sander for your application.
Tool Orbit Options & Basics (00:19)
3M offers random orbital sanders in four different sized orbits: 3/32", 3/16", 5/16" and 3/8".
3/32" orbit: to use with finer grades, least amount of stock removal
3/16" orbit: most commonly used orbit pattern, good balance of stock removal and finish
5/16" orbit: more stock removal needed than 3/16" orbit, not as aggressive as 3/8" orbit
3/8" orbit: most aggressive stock removal, good for large area sanding or if high cut rate is needed
Dust Extraction Options & Basics (01:10)
There are three dust extraction options: Non-Vacuum, Central-Vacuum, and Self-Generated Vacuum. All are available in 3", 5" and 6" diameters. Can be used with Hookit™ and Stikit™ backup pads.
Non-Vacuum Random Orbital Sanders (01:16)
For work environments where dust extraction is not required
Central-Vacuum-Ready Random Orbital Sanders (01:34)
Attaches to existing central vacuum systems for dust extraction
Self-Generated Vacuum Random Orbital Sanders (01:59)
Featuring 3M patented Clean Sanding System and 3M Filter Bag
