since she was about a year old, after marrying her mother, Jessica. Her biological father passed away before she was born.
A couple of days ago, Madeline did something that warranted a punishment. When I was addressing it, she lashed out, saying, "You’re not my dad. I don’t have to follow you." It stung, but I calmly reminded her that I am her legal guardian and she needs to follow the house rules.
Fast forward to our family grocery shopping trip, Madeline said she was hungry. Trying to lighten the mood, I quipped, "Hi Hungry, I’m not your dad." My son found it hilarious, my daughter was mortified, and my wife scolded me for stooping to her level. Was it just a funny dad joke, or did I go too far?
In an update, I apologized to Madeline later that evening. I reminded her that I’ve been there for her through everything, and I love her like my own daughter. It was a heartfelt moment, and she ended up crying, which I took as a sign that my words reached her.
Let me know in the comments if you think I went too far or if it was just a harmless joke. Thanks for watching and supporting!
Edit: For those asking, I did legally adopt Madeline, so I am her parent in every sense.
Mini Update: After dinner, I had a heartfelt talk with Madeline, apologizing for my words and reaffirming my role in her life. She cried, which I hope is a good sign that she understood my feelings.
