"For the United States, for the State Department and for the embassy here in Peru, it's so important for us to be able to work together with the authorities in Peru to protect and preserve cultural heritage. We have had a bilateral agreement between our countries for must more than 25 years and we've actually returned over 2,000 pieces of art that entered our country illicitly back to Peru where it belongs."

"The 36 pieces that we delivered this afternoon, are the result of the efforts of the consulates general of Peru, in New York and Denver, which have had the strong support of the U.S. authorities, as well as the coordination carried out by the directorate of cultural heritage of this chancellery and the directorate of recoveries of the ministry of culture."

STORYLINE:
The Peruvian authorities on Tuesday showed a batch of 36 Pre-Hispanic and Colonial works of art recovered from the United States.
The Pre-Hispanic pieces includes textiles from the Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Wari, Chancay, Chuquibamba and Sihuas cultures, some of which are more than 2,000 years old.
Two religious paintings from the XVII and XVIII centuries, and stolen from temples in Cusco and Chancay were also returned.
The pieces were recovered by the FBI and handed to the Peruvian consulate in Denver.
Part of the collection of textiles were repatriated through the Peru Consulate in New York, as part of an agreement with the "Siena College" which held the pieces.
In addition to the returned art, there are five mummified human remains that will be delivered in the following days.
These are a mummified heads and a funerary bundle.
Three of these heads are reduced skulls, belonging to the Indigenous Jíbaro from northern Peru.
