The remarks Lavrov made
during an interview with
Italy's Rete 4 channel on Sunday
was met with outrage
across Israel's political spectrum
Lavrov’s remark came days after
Israel marked
Holocaust Remembrance Day
one of the most solemn occasions
in the Israeli calendar
Israeli PM Naftali Bennett
tweeted furiously,
indicating Lavrov’s wording
were meant to "blame
the Jews themselves for
the most terrible crimes in history"
Ukraine's Zelensky also reacted to
Lavrov’s comments in
his nightly video address
criticizing Russian leadership
had either forgotten
"all the lessons of World War Two"
or "perhaps they have never
learned those lessons"
Observers said Mr. Lavrov's comments
maybe symbolized a steep decline
in the ties between Russia and Israel
at a time when Israel has sought to
stake out a cautious position
amid Russia-Ukraine conflict
