As surprising as it may seem, Judge Aileen Cannon actually ruled against Donald Trump in the document trial this week, smacking down his request to take evidence (including classified documents) back to Mar-a-Lago for review. On top of that, she also threatened him with penalties if he reveals any of the classified evidence to people outside of the trial. This is a big win for the prosecution, as Farron Cousins explains.

In a ruling that probably surprised Donald Trump as much as it surprised me this week, the Trump appointed judge overseeing his documents trial, judge Eileen Cannon, actually ruled against Donald Trump's request to be able to take classified information that is evidence in the trial back to his home at Mar-a-Lago. Judge Cannon said, no, no, you can't do that. You have to do it in a secure facility because again, a lot of this evidence against you is actually classified information. That's huge. And that's not even the end of it, but let's just talk about that part for just a moment. Trump, of course, had filed a request a couple weeks ago actually asking Judge Cannon like, Hey Judge, I'm a busy guy, right? I'm crisscrossing the country. I'm running for president. I got a business I gotta take care of. I got a lot of things to do.
I can't be expected as the prosecutors say, I have to, to go to a secure facility to look at the evidence against me. No, no, no. I should be able to, you know, take it home with me and bring it back to Mar-a-Lago where I had already tried to hide it from, from investigators. So just let me take it back so I can look at it at home. And again, in a shocking ruling, the judge said no. And then the judge went further. She added this to her ruling. The limitations on disclosure of classified information set forth in this order are binding on defendant and his counsel and violations may result in criminal and or civil penalties.
So not only is she saying, no, you can't take it home, but she is firing the shot across the bow, letting him know that, Hey, by the way, if you violate this order, I'll hit you with criminal penalties. I, I i, is this a new judge Cannon? Is this suddenly not the same judge who already tried to rig everything in Donald Trump's favor? Don't get your hopes up on that. See, what this is, is it's really just a symbolic victory for the prosecution. I mean, after all, the prosecution had already, you know, basically said, because this is classified information, prosecution being the D O J, uh, we can only have him view it in a secure facility. So Trump technically doesn't lose anything because it just means that the rule that was already in place stays in place. And this could be a way of Judge Cannon just basically throwing prosecutors a bone and possibly trying to be like, see, I'm not totally biased in favor of Trump. I did something that Trump didn't like. I denied one of his requests. So look at me being impartial. And to be honest, I think that's probably
The most likely scenario here. I don't think Judge Cannon has turned over a new leaf. I don't think she has suddenly learned how to handle a criminal trial after only doing them for 14 days out of her entire career. I don't think any of that's true. I think this is basically a facade. This is just a, okay, this victory doesn't matter, but it does make it look like I'm not totally in the tank for Trump, so I'm gonna do it. So here you go, prosecutors, it's important now to pay even more attention to Judge Cannon, the filings that she sees and the rulings, because I wouldn't be surprised if after handing this tiny defeat to Donald Trump, she turns around in a week or two and tries to hand him a pretty big victory. Keep an eye on that.
