Peru has cut its commercial fishing quota by 68 percent in response to warmer water temperatures and depleted stocks of anchovy. The purpose is to allow enough anchovy to reproduce and maintain the current size of the fishery. Peru produces about a third of the world's supply of fishmeal. In addition to cutting the quota, Peru has also passed a new rule reserving the first five miles from the shore for smaller fishing boats, between five and 10 miles from shore for medium-sized boats, and 10 miles from shore for large vessels.
