(3 Jan 2022) Venezuela began its booster vaccine against COVID-19 amid a surge of the Omicron variant detected in the South American country.
President Nicolás Maduro in a Tweet said that 91% of the population had been vaccinated and called on people to get the booster shot to increase protection against COVID-19.
Dozens of people went to vaccination centers on Monday to get the Sinopharm and Sputnik booster vaccinations.
Juan Goncalves, a 42-year-old dentist who received his third Sinipharm vaccine, said it was necessary for people to continue adhering to bio-security measures.
The Venezuelan government eased COVID-19 quarantine restrictions in November and December and some are worried that positive cases started to rise amid the surge of the new variant.
In Venezuela -- where the coronavirus has not hit as hard as in other South American countries -- there are more than 444,972 positive cases and 5,333 deaths since the first two cases were detected on March 13, 2020.
