For people with PTSD (from cumulative trauma) discussing their trauma can be very difficult and may lead to overwhelm and distress. People are often asked to describe what happened to doctors, investigators, insurance companies etc. So how can you generate an account without becoming too overwhelmed?
In undertaking Trauma therapy one usually needs to figure out where to start, but the psychologist doesn't know where to start because he/she doesn't know the scope of their patients trauma?
An answer to these problems is to write a very low resolution account of each trauma: “trauma headlines”. The account is just the gist of what took place, with no detail, like a newspaper headline. While even this can be challenging it is a helpful first step to untangle trauma which can then help with therapeutic work to unpack and resolve trauma. This can be used to make a trauma timeline. it can be the starting point for expressive writing therapy.
A trauma headline consists of the following elements:
Who you were? (age, role)
Emotion(s) you felt? (fear, anger)
What occurred (in a few words)? Where?
When?
Even doing a low resolution account like this can stir things up, so it's a good idea to work with a doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist to best prepare for this process.
