In the wake of large-scale internet surveillance and reduced trust in the internet, the European Commission proposed on Wednesday a key reform to the way the internet is managed and run. Pursuing a role as honest broker in future global negotiations on internet Governance, the EU executive's proposal calls for more transparent, accountable and inclusive governance.
"We do not need government control. What we need is to globalise the current multi-stakeholder model. It must be more transparent, more accountable and more inclusive. It must be anchored in fundamental freedoms and human rights. They are not negotiable. We need to do this urgently; just to avoid a split in the global political community." EU Digital Agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes said.
