Determining Adonis’ (AG) Gender
(Parrot Bliss Flock: Please LMK if you have an AG. I see that I have some info on AGs that people often struggle with, like plucking and gender. I am thinking of putting an ebooklet together- do you have any suggested topics or questions you think I should cover? LMK)
So trying to figure out if an AG (African Grey) is male or female isn’t easy. They are sexually dimorphic, which means that you can see the difference in their feathers. Unless you can’t, which happens often.
Frankly, I couldn’t get a straight answer as to how to determine the difference in my research. My mentor looked under my AG’s tail and stated the gender with great certainty.
I looked - I saw the underside of a tail. Nothing more.
Yes, a DNA test will tell you the gender, but when you are trying to choose an AG on the spot and you don’t have a week plus to wait, you might want to be able to look under their tail, like an expert, and know.
Online I couldn’t find good info either-
Then I finally got lucky— after I got Adonis, who is not male. She taught me how to tell the difference. I had planned to get Venus a male companion, but no, she has a hen-friend. (In the bird world, birds are hens and cocks.)
An example of misleading information
Generally speaking, in a given species, one gender tends to be larger than the other. In AGs, males are larger.
Oh, wait! AGs from different parts of Africa are different sizes, so how do you compare? Plus, if you don’t have an second AG that is the opposite sex, how would you know if the AG you are looking at is a hen or a cock?
Inconclusive, right?
Adonis is a big girl. She’s larger than our male, Zeus.
So, how can you tell the difference? There are at least two straight forward ways to tell and a third that can be hard to recognize, but in this video I’ll give you clear examples, and I’ll repeat them, so that you too can know what gender an AG is — just by looking under their tail.
