Business owners always have questions about what happens to the family business in a divorce: one of the main questions is "how do we make one valuation expert work well in a collaborative law situation?"

Hiring one expert to value the business will definitely cut down on the costs (which is always a major concern), but you also have to understand some of the challenges of working with one expert.

First we need to understand that the valuation expert is really there to help the court, judge, mediators, attorneys and other parties understand the financial value of the company.

This means that if the valuation expert does their job well - derives a value based on reasonable assumptions and applies the appropriate valuation methods -- then both parties will be UNHAPPY!

Why is that? Well if you figure that between the couple, one will have an opinion that the value should be really high and the other will think the value is really low.

The reality is that the value of the company is TYPICALLY going to be somewhere in the middle, which will make both people unhappy with the valuation result and then... with the valuation expert.

Therefore, you can be sure that if both parties are unhappy, then the value is probably right.

But you need to be prepared when you hire a valuation expert, they will not just "create" a value to make either party happy, they will work to find the "right" value which is developed from the company financials and other issues specific to the business, economy and industry.

If you understand some of the challenges to working with one expert in a collaborative law setting -- then you will be satisfied with the final result and saved money in the process.
