Today, let's talk about the alignment system of Dungeons and Dragons, and other fantasy RPGs.
The initial BX system provided but three, which Dungeon Crawl Classics and Old School Essentials follow. Also, there was a notion of an alignment language that all intelligent creatures who shared an alignment spoke.
Modernly, D&D observes 9 alignments, but they have stopped requiring alignment restrictions in the Paladin. Others have called for a 32 alignment system.
I look at alignment through the lens of history; the Vikings seem an excellent choice to characterize chaos. How would we characterize the Saxons they raided?
What would William Marshall's alignment be? How about King Cnut?
