if you’re a reptile keeper and have been for a while, I’m sure there was a time where you fell victim to those atrocious ten gallon reptile “starter kits”. if you haven’t, serious congratulations to you for managing to avoid the sea of misinformation out there. ‼️
here is what those kits tend to include and why you do not need them for a majority of species:
- reptile carpet: is known to rip out teeth and nails, and is also a breeding ground for some nasty bacteria if kept over time. they can be easy to throw out and replace, but this substrate offers absolutely nothing else beneficial to your reptile.
- usually contains a hide that your reptile will 1) need more than just one of, and 2) will likely outgrow in a matter of months. waste of money, IMO.
- mini lamp fixtures, which usually do not provide enough heat for the reptile.
- no UVB provided in these kits! one of the most important aspects of reptile husbandry.
- ten gallon terrarium, obviously, that has not nearly enough space for a proper heat gradient, is usually top opening (this makes you appear as a predator when feeding from the top or grabbing the reptile from the top), and is glass of course (not my personal preference for a majority of species because it makes them feel less secure in their environment).
the amount of money you will save just buying the supplies you need and the enclosure that will work best for your reptile rather than buying a kit of things your reptile does not need and will outgrow … astronomical. 🫶🏻
