I don't think I've done a Saturday of filming in the north east before, so I thought I'd head down to Teesside and give it a go. I bought an off peak return between Alnmouth and Newcastle (£13.40, £8.30 with railcard discount), but the majority of today's exploration was covered by a Tyne and Tees Day Ranger - exceptional value (£25.60, £16.90 with railcard discount) for travel across a wide part of the region..
The first thing that caught my eye was a very short notice working from Tees Yard to Hartlepool Pipe Mill. Train 6Z30 was hauled by DB Cargo's 66007, complete with cheery driver, and was loaded with steel coils on a mixed consist of wagons.
From there I headed to Yarm to see train 6N31, the Scunthorpe to Lackenby steel slabs. In charge today was DB Cargo's 66068. On this occasion the slabs only made it as far as Tees Yard, with some of them being taken to Skinningrove later in the day.
It was then a short hop to Northallerton, where I could see a light loco was heading south towards York. Direct Rail Services' 37422 "Victorious" was running as 0Z22, off for a spot of maintenance. The signal cleared as the loco was passing through the station, so you could hear the throaty roar as the driver opened the taps.
Still at Northallerton a couple of intermodal container trains (4M25 and 4Z27) were heading southbound. These would usually run on the west coast, but have been diverted due to weekend engineering work at Carstairs.
I then saw a brace of Freightliner class 66 locomotives (66590 and 66418) heading north towards Millerhill and the weekly GB Railfreight convoy of class 66 locomotives (66770, 66739, 66760, 66761, 66779, 66782) heading towards Tyne Yard.
I then repositioned to Allens West to see train 4E98, today hauled by DB Cargo's 66160, taking its load of intermodal containers towards Tees Dock.
Finally, I headed towards home and saw train 4E04, the 1235 Mossend Pd Stlg GBRf to Doncaster Iport GBRf, passing through Alnmouth. This train was hauled by GB Railfreight's rather scruffy looking 66706 "Nene Valley" and consisted of a rake of Stobart branded containers.
Filmed on 4th March 2023.
