This is the Men's black belt kumite category, using JKA rules. Only sparring gloves and a mouthguard are required protective gear during these kumite events.
Shotokan karate is a non-contact variety of martial art, where the purpose of the master practitioner is to demonstrate not only speed & power of technique and domination of a sparring match, but exquisite control of techniques executed.
This is, after all, a sport, and most of us have jobs or school to go to on Monday morning!
