What would you say if I told you there was a way to play a scale so it repeated notes in a sequenced order? In this lesson, I am going to show you a sound that’s based off of sequencing scale tones so they produce a mathematical note order.
It might seem like using this would have your music come across as robotic. But, that won’t be the case. Not only does this sound great, but you can use it when building almost any melody or guitar solo.
The technique is called, “Scale Sequencing,” and some might say that if you play a scale this way it only sound like classical music. I disagree. I don’t think scale sequencing should be limited to only classical music because when it is applied sparingly, sequencing can sound good in many types of music styles.
The secret behind this sound is that it can operate as two separate functions. One way is direction. We can sequence lines ascending or descending. The other way is note order. A scale sequence can be composed using scale tones in sequential order (linear), or in a non-linear note order.
This lesson will hit both ways. This means our examples will showcase scale sequences with both movements. Additionally, we’ll also include sequencing arpeggios and we’ll include building a sequence to track a chord progression.
