I am Der Geher and this time over 100 km away from Hamburg City Hall. And still in Hamburg. The island Neuwerk belongs to Hamburg and can be reached on foot from Cuxhaven at low tide. This part of the city is of course also visited. From the beach in Sahlenburg, we walk through the mud flats. Two tideways are crossed and after about 9 km the island is reached. From the lighthouse the path ends with a panoramic view over Neuwerk.

Hamburg received the island from Saxony-Lauenburg in 1286 and at the end of the century the right to build a tower. This was to serve as a sea marker and outpost against pirates. The 35 m high tower was completed in 1310 and is the oldest building in Hamburg. The district of Neuwerk also includes the two islands of Scharhörn and Nigehörn, which are bird sanctuaries. Everything is part of the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park. There are 17 people living on Neuwerk today.
