Before Tommy got Jimmy Conway's attention, he used to work as a shoeshiner.
That kid was great. They used to call him "Spitshine Tommy." He'd make your shoes look like fuckin' mirrors. He was terrific, he was the best. And he made a lot of money, too.

During that period, a made-man called Billy Batts ordered Tommy to shine his shoes, and after telling him a couple of three things, they became friends.

While Billy was serving his prison sentence, they grew apart because now Tommy was all grown up and doin' the town. When Billy got out, for the sake of the good old times, he asked Tommy to get his shinebox, but... he didn't hear about it, he has been away a long time, they didn't go up there and tell him that Tommy doesn't shine shoes anymore, which led to the incident.
