Oxides of Nitrogen:
These are formed when very high-temperature combustion reactions occur. The mechanism that governs this is known as the Zeldovich mechanism. This mechanism is strongly temperature-dependent. The emissions in petrol engines are very high but the catalytic converter deals with this emission effectively. Cannot be controlled effectively in diesel engines.
Oxides of Sulfur:
This pollutant is mostly produced from the combustion of coal. Brown coal is the worst culprit.
Contributes to acid rain. Usually dealt with through the use of chemical scrubbing devices.
Carbon Dioxide:
The major pollutant in combustion. Difficult to control because essentially this is the product that we want. Contributes to global warming. The only solution is to move away from fossil fuels. Could this mean Biofuel or electricity?
