Bucharest Stock Exchange celebrates its 25th anniversary on November 20, 2020.

The history of the Bucharest Stock Exchange is in large part the story of modern Romania. In 1995 when we relaunched the Bucharest Stock Exchange, it all began in the home of the National Bank of Romania. It was a journey full of challenges that we’ve managed to rise to, that we’ve overcome together, with all parties involved — the brokerage and intermediation industry, and the companies listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. We are happy when we look around us and see that some of those colleagues who started on this path in 1995 are still with us at the Bucharest Stock Exchange. In the first year of activity, the Stock Exchange had 9 companies listed, and a capitalization of approximately 26 million lei. Fast-forward to the present, and we can see what huge steps forward the stock exchange has made. We now have 370 companies listed, a quarter of which are on the main list, with a total market capitalization of over 104 billion lei. This is a measure of how much progress the stock exchange has made in its 25-year evolution. If we look at the volume of transactions, we see that this year the market has recorded share transactions totaling 10 billion lei. If we also look at the bond market, there have been transactions of around 2 billion lei, so that’s a total of 12 billion lei in transactions, this year alone, that were made on this stock exchange trading system.

You can say that a lot has happened over the 25-year history of the Bucharest Stock Exchange. Moreover, you can say that we could never have got where we are today without the support of the brokerage industry and issuers, or without the State, which regulates our activity, and is, at the same time, the Bucharest Stock Exchange’s biggest investor, through the State-owned companies it has listed. Every one of those I remember was by our side and has put a building block into what the Bucharest Stock Exchange represents today. Our promotion to emerging market status this year, the same year that we’re celebrating the 25-year anniversary, has raised the bar for us. I’m convinced that, going forward, the Bucharest Stock Exchange’s role in financing the Romanian economy, in financing Romanian companies, will be even more important.
