I’m in the hate phase of my relationship with my 335i. I did a little second to third gear pull. Just at the end of the pull, I see in my rearview mirror a bloom of smoke behind me, and smoke coming from my hood.
Luckily it was mid-day so no one was on the streets and I wasn’t far from the garage so got it home real quick. The first thing I noticed was a puddle of oil and I state literally a puddle of oil. Pooling at the front of the car. My first thought was my turbo oil return line ruptured. I opened the hood and oil was all over.
Mainly the front of the engine along the belt and radiator.
I checked the return line and it was dry. Since my car is an early 07 build it didn’t come with oil cooler lines, and the only thing in the front of the engine that could leak is the camshaft seal. I’m 99% sure it's that but going to take the front apart to check and see. It's not a hard job but you need specialty tools to remove and install the gasket. Like most things, BMW the part isn’t the problem is the labor involved, in which the gasket, sealant and such cost about $80. But the real kicker is the tool to remove it cost a bit over $300.
Once I removed the crank hub and started the car for a few seconds to see exactly where the leak was coming from. I found to my surprise that the leak was coming from the top transmission oil cooler line. Looks like a manual swap is in my future.
