Parents Tried to Force Me to Cancel My Engagement Party for My Golden Child Brother's Graduation.
I (28M) recently got engaged to Nina (28F), my high school sweetheart, and we decided to host an engagement party. Around the same time, my younger brother Leon (26M) graduated from community college. I sent out invitations for our party, scheduled for last weekend, and that's when the drama started.
My parents called, demanding I cancel our engagement party because they were planning Leon’s graduation party for the same day, though they hadn't sent out invitations yet. I refused, suggesting they could reschedule since I had already sent mine. They were furious, and so was Leon.
I'm not close with my parents or Leon, who has always been the golden child. They often celebrated his achievements with grand parties, unlike my milestones, which barely got any recognition. For instance, my fifth birthday was a small gathering, whereas Leon’s was a lavish themed event. This pattern continued throughout our lives, with his middle and high school graduations also getting big celebrations while mine were barely acknowledged.
