An iris coloboma is a defect, that is a gap in the iris. It has a characteristic keyhole or comet shape, with the round end in the center, as seen in this image. It can occur in isolation, or in association other eye abnormalities, such as cataract and glaucoma. Coloboma can occur in otherwise healthy individuals, but it is also associated with many different syndromes (e.g., CHARGE syndrome) and chromosomal abnormalities (e.g., Trisomy 13 and 18). It can also occur due to trauma or surgery. Vision may or may not be affected by the coloboma.
