My thoughts on the state of the Game, Film, and Illustration industry as well as Art School.
I have talked about this all before. But maybe not quite like this. New times, new perspectives.
YOU are a WIZARD. You are the one capable of magic and the most powerful spells. It's within you. You are the only one capable of fresh, new, and raw creation.
Is Art School worth it to prospective students? Will it pay itself off? Will my student succeed if they go to Art School? Does Art School help you get a job as an artist? How do I get a job? How do I get a job as a concept artist? How do I get work as a concept artist? Should I become a concept artist? Is concept art a good career? Is games a good career? Is AI going to take our art jobs? Can AI become a concept artist? How do we fight AI?
I have long tried to guide many a student around art school if at all possible, but still tried to steer them toward success in games or film. Guide them to the right company. But maybe even that was misguided benevolence. Maybe Art School, the studios, the companies, Hollywood...maybe they benefit as things are. Otherwise they probably wouldn't be the way they are...
But it doesn't benefit artists, writers, animators, creators. It never has. And now we are maybe just seeing that for the first time.
Maybe it is a wakeup call. Maybe it's time to say out loud "the Emperor has no clothes". We have let them USE our magic. Our creativity and art. The schools profit hand over fist, and the studios get exactly the talent they need at the lowest of premiums. 20,000 students graduate an art academy of some sort ANNUALLY.....as I understand it, that is more than the sum total of jobs globally in those fields in entertainment.
As for my own experience, I have attended both Academy of Art University, Art Institute for roughly 1.5 years total. I am still paying for it. I have also worked for Riot Games, Epic Games, EA Maxis, Hi-Rez Studios, Lucasfilm Licencing, ArtStation, Wizards of the Coast, and more. Lots more. I have given hundreds of portfolio reviews, art directed and produced with the top talent across the industry, I have lectured, I have taught, I have hired, I have art directed. I have gate kept. Despite my best efforts. After nearly 15 years at it myself, my observations are that playing the game is zero sum. Some get the sum, others get the zero.
It just is.
But it doesn't have to be.
That's why we are here.
Only you can choose your own artistic path
