As we’ve talked about in the past, the end grain to long grain butt joint is a terrible way to join stock. But if you’re just starting out and don’t have the knowledge or equipment to make more complicated joints, we can strengthen a butt joint by adding dowels. To add dowels for these types of joints, you only need to map out the face. After the holes are drilled, the face becomes a template to create the second half. The rest of the joint is pretty self explanatory at this point. Finish the holes, add the dowels and you’re done.
But here are a few quick tips for these types of joints:
* The diameter needed should be at least a third or half of the part thickness: If I’m using 3/4” stock, a safe thickness would be a 1/4” and no larger than a 3/8’s dowel.
* The depth should be no less than one and a half times the thickness of the face: If, my face is 3/4 of an inch, the depth should be no less than an inch and a half.
* To prevent hydraulic pressure problems, fluted dowels are the best to use.
* Finally, if the dowels are hard to hammer in, a microwave can quickly shrink the diameter.
