Ernie Mitchell is not just another drywall contractor. Based in Ontario, Canada, he uses his knowledge to sculpt intricate 3D murals. Employing joint compound, he creates stunning nature-themed sculptures on drywall, featuring birds, horses, wolves and dogs.
Mitchell began experimenting with drywall in the early 1990s. He was playing with raised surfaces and light. Then, he started using wheat and barley stalks to make impressions. Today, his pieces have evolved into everlasting works of art that demonstrate his extraordinary creativity. If you want to learn how to do it,
Very likely a water base gypsum or plaster mud- like what is used to patch drywall. You can find “how to videos” on you tube. I would think that one of the most important materials would be the fixer, used to stabilize the sculpture. It can be fragile and you can expect people will want to touch it. So a fixing acrylic or urethane spray is likely, then paint over it to match the wall (or not). I can also think of instances where “modge podge” or even watered down white glue might be useful.
Bernie begins each job with a vision and a blank space, typically an area of drywall with a few coats of primer. He oftentimes creates his vision from nature - sculpting birds, wolves and horses. On a recent job Bernie was commissioned to create a sculpture of a wolf and wolf cub. The initial shapes of the wolves were created using drywall compound. Texture was then added to the piece by using a variety of shaping tools. A drywall knife is the perfect instrument to create tree branches, a spoon shapes the compound to form the ground and brushes create the ideal texture to replicate wolf fur.
