Polycoria is an extremely rare eye condition in which a person has more than one functional pupil in the same eye. Each of these pupils can constrict and dilate independently or together in response to light. This unusual condition can significantly affect vision, as the multiple pupils disrupt the normal way light enters the eye.
How People with Polycoria Would See:
Blurred Vision: Since multiple pupils allow light to enter from different angles, this can cause distortion and blurring. The extra pupils prevent light from being focused properly on the retina, leading to difficulty seeing clearly.
Double or Ghosted Images: The presence of more than one pupil can create overlapping or "ghost" images because light may pass through multiple points in the eye, causing visual confusion or a double-image effect.
Difficulty with Light Exposure: The normal pupil adjusts to light by constricting or dilating. In polycoria, the ability to properly regulate light can be impaired, making the person more sensitive to bright light (photophobia) or less able to adapt to changes in lighting conditions.
Reduced Depth Perception: The misalignment of light entering the eye can affect depth perception and make it difficult to judge distances accurately, which could lead to challenges in daily activities like walking, reading, or driving.
