I discuss the changes that occur with atmospheric perspective: a decrease in contrasts, softer edges with less detail, duller colors, and a trend toward a light blue-gray. It is due to scattered blue skylight that interacts with the air. This principle can be used, not only to show depth, but also to separate the foreground from the background and to make horizontal surfaces (like water or a table top) appear horizontal. You can even use it to show that a window separates the viewer from the scene and to portray lemons floating in a glass of water. I end with the moon, where none of these changes occur due to its lack of atmosphere.
