How to knit the stockinette stitch for beginners

A step by step knitting tutorial on the stockinette stitch. It's probably the most popular knitting pattern and quite easy to knit - so perfect for beginners and their first work. Socks and pullovers will look beautiful in stockinette stitch as well.
Here's the repeat:
Row 1: Knit all stitches
Row 2: Purl all stitches
Repeat those two rows over and over again. It does not matter with which row you begin.

To prevent the edges from curling in, add a garter stitch edge of two knit stitches on either side.
Bind off the stockinette stitch with a regular bind off. You don't need any special stretchy cast off for this pattern.
If you want to knit the stockinette stitch in the round, you just have to knit all stitches. There's no need to purl!
