This week's lesson is entitled, "The Flood." Today we wanted to take a look at the flood story, or stories, in light of something we have been addressing this quarter: the Documentary Hypothesis.
If you have ever read Genesis chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9, you may have noticed that some things in the flood story are repeated, and some things even conflict with each other. And the thing that is most compelling of all about these contradictions and repetitions is that scholars have noticed that these differences and contradictions can be separated out into two distinct cohesive narratives.
What is much more subtle and difficult to notice are the places where the same thing is mentioned twice, but once they are pointed out, you just can't "unsee" them. It becomes easier to consider that there are two flood stories instead of one very repetitive one. In this video, we discuss many of these contradictions and repetitions, and how to handle the compelling evidence that the flood story in Genesis is actually two different stories.
When we consider all the evidence, it becomes plain that there really are two originally separate written sources that have been blended together to create the story we now have in Genesis 6-9. Thankfully, it's possible to separate the sources and read them on their own. Sure, this means we have to give up the idea that the Pentateuch was written by a single author. But holding on to that idea in spite of the evidence from the text itself is no way to treat the text with integrity. It is far better to read what each author had to say and consider it on its own merits.
