Heavy rains triggered severe flooding in the Spanish town of Cadaques on Friday, sweeping away dozens of cars parked in a normally dry riverbed that turned into a torrent rushing down from nearby mountains.
The surging water carried the vehicles downstream, where they collided with a bridge, creating a blockage and worsening the flood's impact. The floodwaters inundated streets and scattered debris across the town, causing widespread disruption.
At least 219 people died in Spain after heavy rains last week caused waterways to overflow, creating flash floods that surged through suburbs south of the city of Valencia. On the same day as the latest round of flooding in Cadaques, local residents of Massanassa condemned the government’s handling of the deadly floods.
“All the deaths that took place could have been absolutely avoided,” said Josep Antoni Cabello, a retired local resident.
