Hiking to the summit (top) of Mount Vesuvius takes about 20-30 minutes from where your bus or car drops you off, about 1,000 feet vertically from the top. When you reach the top, you will look down on the crater of an active volcano, the one that destroyed four ancient Roman towns, including Pompeii in 79 A.D. In fact, Mount Vesuvius is the only volcano to have erupted on the European mainland in the last 100 years (1944). Personally, I didn't think it was an easy hike up but it's not too often that you get to stare down at the crater of an active volcano!
