I'd mostly quit playing GD, but then I saw some build lists where Defiler was mentioned as one of the worst mastery combos and I just had to do it.
Here's the Grimtools link, which I'll also post in a pinned comment:

One thing I need to point out - this isn't an attempt to make the bestest ever Defiler build ever, it was an attempt to make one that wasn't complete garbage. To some extent, I succeeded.
Damage is a mix of Fire and Vitality, with a few of the Necro's significant skills having 100% fire conversion - most obviously Bone Harvest and Ravenous Earth which ends up looking like Fissure.
The build is massively gear dependent, in fact it's entirely gear dependent for the Fire damage conversions.
Some items can be swapped for others, but only where those items are not involved in converting damage types. For example, chest armour and rings could be pretty much whatever you wanted. Relic is only there for the dual wielding, otherwise it's contributing nothing to the build. Other options are available, but some damage conversion will have to be dropped if you want a nice relic, which may or may not end up being more fun than this.
Proabaly the one item people will point out as unnecessary:
Blazeheart - I know it's not essential, but I was obsessing over how many Necro skills I could convert to Fire damage. You could probably ditch this dagger, use a better relic and a decent off-hand item or even a shield, and end up with a bit more of a min-maxed build. Ultimately, it's a Defiler, and no amount of min-maxing will make it 'the best build ever'.
