So fibre isn’t just beneficial to:
✔️ boost our gut microbiome
✔️ support the health of our gut wall
✔️ increase the volume of our stool to help prevent constipation
But FIBRE also works on our metabolism by increasing a hormone called GLP-1 in the body.
When we're used to a diet rich in soluble fibre, including foods like beans, lentils, oats, vegetables, chia and flax seeds and psyllium husk, the GLP-1 levels in the blood rise. It is actually the action of the gut microbes which feed on the fibre and produce short chain fatty acids which initiate this process.
What does GLP-1 do?
It is the same hormone that is activated by Ozempic and Wegovy, the latest approved weight loss drugs.

✔️ Slows down gastric emptying, which can make us feel satiated ( but can make some people on Ozempic nauseous)
✔️ It activates the pancreas to release more insulin supporting better put sugar control.
✔️ Activates our brown fat- this is our active fat cells that can bring fat and generate heat.
✔️ Slows down the rate at which we store fat in the adipose calls.
We live in a country where around 95% of people don’t eat enough fibre and around 66% of the population are overweight or obese. Should there be a better government strategy to increase fibre consumption to actively help people that want to support their metabolism in a more natural way?
Just ONE tablespoon of psyllium husk contains 8.5g of soluble fibre. This is the amount of extra fibre scientists are advising we consume daily to make a difference to our health. Half an avocado, 100g of raspberries both contain 7g fibre and 100 g of lentils or beans, 30g Chia seeds and 30g of flaxseeds all contain over to an extra 10g of fibre.
We might just need small changes rather than large ones to make a difference?
