New research shows there is major cause for concern when it comes to the nursing shortage in North Carolina. Nurses are leaving the health care industry at an alarming rate. It was an issue before the COVID-19 pandemic and leaders in the health care world say it's only gotten worse because of the challenges COVID-19 presented, including burnout for overworked employees.
Nurses spend more time beside a patient than any other health care provider. All those hours providing essential care adds up, and for many nurses, the stress of providing care to so many patients is simply too much.
“The health care system just cannot exist without the nursing workforce,” Dennis Taylor with the North Carolina Nurses Association told WCNC Charlotte.
