Arguably the most successful 6x6 truck ever built. Manufactured near to Moscow from 1966 to 1989, nearly 1,000,000 of these fantastic trucks were built. Zils didn't really change in 23 years of production and were mainly manufactured as a general purpose truck. In a nutshell, they were designed to be driven and abused, by conscript soldiers, who did their best to destroy them (and nearly always failed). Conscript drivers were not even trusted to lock the doors, the corporal locked the doors. That's is why the key lock is on the passenger door, but not worry you can change these round. Zil box construction. Boxes are made to an incredibly high specification. Panels as standard are 1.5mm outer Aluminium on 4mm ply. Then there is 25mm Isocyanate solid foam and finally 4mm ply on the inside. Running at 25mm intervals vertically are 4mm ply ribs with gives incredible strength. The panels are joined by bonding, bolts and riveted outside and screwed inside. These are rigid and not designed to move.
The engine will return around 7 - 8 MPG, maximum speed is around 60 MPH, may be a little more, when run in. The Zil even in the seventies had very advanced reliable electronic ignition, and a synchromesh 5 speed transmission, albeit first is low gear and not always used. Engines are smooth, relaxed and don't suffer from your British equivalent forward control gremlins of fuel vaporising when hot. The cooling system holds 25 litres of coolant
Road driving. Zils generally weigh around 6.8 tonnes empty. On the old driving licence you are ok, providing you watch your loading.
