The James is taking a team approach to the improvement of colorectal cancer screening and care with a joint effort to save and improve lives in Appalachia.
Researchers have identified three U.S. regions in which colorectal cancer death rates are high, including the Appalachian area of Ohio and Kentucky.
To address the issue, Electra Paskett, PhD, and her OSUCCC – James colleagues are working with multiple health systems to increase colorectal cancer screening and improve care in the region.
“We would like to increase colon cancer screening rates in these health systems,” Paskett says. “Some of the clinics we're working with, they have rates of screening 20 percent, 30 percent — we would like to double that.”
