It is important that all structural engineers have a basic understanding of soil mechanics and foundations, as this is the completion of the load path and not detailing correctly can have adverse effects on your structure. Different soils will behave differently when loaded, so how will your structure behave when founded on clay, rock or sand, and does the load applied to your foundations affect the soil over time.
I present a practical example of a bearing failure in sand to demonstrate, how a sandy material resists the bearing actions from foundations, where the sand is displaced causing shear planes in the soil and local heaving.
No Basic overview of Soil behaviour would be complete without mentioning how soil can also impact the effect of an earthquake.
