Greetings and welcome to the world of Hublot. Today I'll be your guide to the proper usage, care and maintenance of your Hublot Big Bang Steel Ceramic. It's important to note that this automatic winding watch can nevertheless be manually wound should it run down, by taking the crown in its first position flush to the case and turning it 20 to 30 turns in the clockwise direction. At that point, you can put the watch on the wrist if its time and date are correct and the natural course of kinetic action in conjunction with the case back winding rotor, will continue to wind the watch and keep it powered up in the course of routine use.
However, should you wish to wind the watch to its maximum 42 hours of rated power reserve, simply continue turning. Due to the bridle style mainspring, you cannot accidentally overwind this watch. The bridle will simply by design and relieve any excess strain. As you continue turning the watch, you'll know that the watch has reached its point of bridle slippage when you hear a subtle click or pop within the movement. That's the sign of a slipping mainspring. The watch is now fully wound.
Now use hacking seconds and advance the minutes hand to the next nearest minute. Wait for your reference time to catch up and as soon as the second and minute are precisely matched, push the crown back in. Now you've synchronized your reference time.
There's also a function that is one pull or one detent spring out from flush against the case. Between setting and winding, and this is known as the quick-set function for the date window. It allows you to rapidly cycle the date disc should the watch run down or encounter an irregular length month, with a single handling caveat. It should never be actuated between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. as these are the hours during which the watch's own automatic date jumper is engaged in the turnover. Attempting to use the quick-set date during the automatic turnover can severely damage the watch, so always be cognizant of the hours when you're using the quick-set date function.
This watch is a chronograph, and the chronograph is actuated as such. Use the pusher at two o'clock to start, stop and then resort to the pusher at four o'clock to reset. A conventional chronograph must always be started and then stopped before it's reset. Attempting to reset the chronograph while it's still running can severely damage the timepiece. With respect to other handling restrictions, three principal areas of concern arise. Water resistance, magnetism and shock, of which water resistance is the greatest concern.
This timepiece is rated by Hublot to 100 meters of water resistance, which the manufacturer advises is sufficient for most aquatic activities, short of professional diving. However, you do need to help your watch in order to avoid accidental drownings. Keep the crown flush to the case and its functions, as well as those of the chronograph pushers, completely disused while the watch is submerged or even while there's simply water on the case, as using any of the functions can bypass the seals and introduce water to the interior of the watch. Catastrophic results always ensue. It's important to note you can have the chronograph running under water, you simply can't start, stop or reset while there's water on the case.
Finally, with respect to mechanical service, Hublot advises every three to five years having the watch checked by an authorized Hublot service center. Every two years, water resistance should be checked, as it is not a static feature of the watch, and over time as seals age and lubricants dry, water resistance will ebb. When you take your watch for a water test every two years, bare minimum, it's best to have the watch's cosmetic and mechanical condition checked as well. This way you can all three services, cosmetic, water resistance and mechanical performed at an authorized Hublot service center.
These agencies should be used exclusively as they alone are equipped with the trained personnel, specialized equipment and original Hublot factory replacement parts to maintain the integrity of your watch as both an instrument and as an investment.
