60007 Sir Nigel Gresley hauls Welsh Marches Express into Hereford where it decoupled to take on water. The locomotive built in 1937 at Doncaster for the LNER was attached to the train at Bristol Temple Meads. The A4 then proceeded through Filton Abbey Wood and Severn Tunnel Junction arriving in Hereford before midday. From the city it departed for Shrewsbury.
Sir Nigel Gresley is the holder of the postwar steam record speed of 112 miles per hour (180 km/h) gained on 23 May 1959 and carries a plaque to that effect. It was withdrawn from service by British Railways on 1 February 1966,and was targeted by the A4 Preservation Society.
