Bruges (Brugge) is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, in the northwest of the country, and the seventh-largest city of the country by population.
Sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North, Bruges had significant economic importance, thanks to its port, and was once one of the world's chief commercial cities.
Still an active, living city today, Brugge has preserved the architectural and urban structures which document the different phases of its development including the central Market Place with its Belfry, the Béguinage, as well as the hospitals, the religious and commercial complexes, and the historic urban fabric.
