The general process of clamp resist dyeing (in Chinese Jia Xie夹缬), is to clamp a piece of folded fabric between a pair of engraved blocks, then get it dyed. In the dyeing sink, the fabric that tightly clamped by the woodblock cannot be dyed because the dye liquor cannot penetrate through. However, the dye liquor can seep into the hollowed engraved patterns, and thus the unique resist patterns can emerge. Upon removal of the blocks, the exquisite patterns would be revealed on the fabric.
