Violent clashes broke out in Southport, a town in northwestern England, where a mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event claimed the lives of three children. Around 100 protesters, believed by police to be supporters of the far-right English Defence League (EDL), threw bricks at a mosque, battled police and set cars on fire. Some 39 officers were injured in the clashes, at least eight seriously. The violence broke out shortly after a vigil was held in the town centre, where hundreds fell silent in tribute to the victims of the attack that also left five children and two adults critically injured. Police have said they are not treating the stabbing as terror-related, but have not released any details of the suspected attacker other than that he is 17 years old and originally from Wales. Hours after the attack on 29 July, social media was filled with posts spreading unverified information about the suspect's background.
