Hi everyone. Aiden here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install these Erickson retractable ratchet straps. These can be used as regular ratchet straps on your utility trailer mounted up permanently so you've got some good tie down points because they are long enough to do that for certain situations, but they can also be used as transom straps on your boat. That's how we have it set up right now. And the nice thing about these is the fact that they are retractable.
So pushing that red button in the middle will release the strap and let us bring it back into its housing so it's nice and tidy out of the way. Whenever we're ready to use it again we can just bring it out, hook it up, press that red button to take the slack out and ratchet it down to fully secure it. So it's really quick and simple to get set up. It's a great application on our boat trailer here because it's quick to just hook onto that point and get it tight. Let's check it out.
Now the strap itself is going to be two inches wide and can get up to five and a half feet long so that's why I kind of said in certain applications you could probably use this on a utility trailer because if you're pulling up something like an ATV or a UTV, you can go from the edge of that utility trailer up to some tie down points on the vehicle relatively easily with this amount of strap. But it's still short enough that we're not getting a giant housing right here on our boat trailer. The weight capacity on here is gonna be 1,333 pounds. That's a safe working load limit giving it a brake strength of 4,000 pounds. So just make sure you're not overloading the strap whenever you're using it.
And keep in mind that it does come in pairs. If I release the S hook here, we can see that it's going to be a metal hook with a vinyl coating. And I will say it's a very large metal hook as well. A lot bigger than some of the other ones that I've worked with on this boat trailer today. So I'm definitely confident that it's gonna be sturdy and the vinyl coating is gonna be really nice because if we do maybe bump into our boat over here we're not too worried about damage.
One thing I maybe don't love about it is that the whole retracting mechanism really isn't as smooth as I would like it to be. Comparing it to some Fulton F2 straps that we've worked with, those ones felt a lot nicer and when I pulled it out, they kept tension on the strap. So right now I'm getting a bit of loose strap so when I set it up it's just kind of dangling there and I have to go and press that button to take the tension out. Could be nice in certain situations that it doesn't just automatically retract but I kind of prefer the just automatic retraction of the Fulton F2 straps for this application as a transom strap. I will say I like the handle here on the Erickson quite a bit though. That coating over top makes it so I'm not touching bare metal and it's big enough that I'm getting a good handhold on it and I get a good amount of leverage. Now this is designed to be a permanent bolt-on insulation. It comes with hardware. We didn't end up using ours and we'll we'll show you why as we go through the install process. So check out how we did it. Starting off the installation you wanna get your old strap removed. Ours today is definitely looking worse for wear seeing better days, so we're just gonna get that taken off and tossed off to the side cause we're not reusing that for anything. Next, for our installation, we're gonna actually be utilizing this bracket from Boat Buckle. It comes in a kit of two and has all the hardware included with the kit if you decide to go this route. Like I mentioned there's a couple different ways you can mount this up. I don't wanna block our taillight at all so for us, I don't think mounting it here is going to be a good idea just because then the strap's gonna be out here. I mocked it up on the other side and found that the longer tab for our trailer on the inside is gonna actually be pretty okay and we don't have any sort of clearance issues. So then I can take the included hardware with that bracket get it attached through my mounting hole of choice and installed with a wrench and socket. Again, this part isn't required for the strap, but depending on your trailer you might want to pick this up. With it mostly tightened down, I can get it into position so I can fully tighten this down now. Now for the mounting of our transom st
