Adventures and Cappadocia go hand in hand. There are lots of options available for a stay in this desert region of Turkey. In this travel vlog we aim to cover the three core activities on offer: A Hot Air Balloon Ride, the Green Tour and the Red Tour. This can add up to an expensive visit, so we took the Red Tour self-guided, and show you how you can do the same.
Göreme is a village in Nevşehir province in Central Anatolia, and we arrived here after landing at Kayseri airport. This is a bit of a distance, so arranged a shuttle in advance with the hotel we were staying at: Göreme Mansion. This started our adventure in Cappadocia (meaning the land of horses). Taking the shuttle through the dark night and dropping people off at various places, it took longer in time to reach our hotel than the flight from Istanbul to Kayseri!
I also experienced some illness, which can happen whilst traveling, but I was determined to make the most of being in Cappadocia and take part in the Hot Air Ballon ride we had pre-booked. Weather conditions need to be clear and dry for flights to take place. Waking up at 4:30 AM we could not go due to my illness, but luckily no flights took place due to the cloudy weather. We switched our itineraries and took the Green Tour instead.
The Green Tour is best with a guide and transport as places are far apart and will prove difficult if you do not have your own vehicle. We viewed the fairy chimney stacks over a panoramic viewpoint and headed to the Derinkuyu underground city, a huge network of man-made caves and tunnels used for food stores and for hiding during times of persecution. Taking lunch in the lush Ihlara Valley it felt like a completely different place. With a running river and tall trees surrounded by large rocky hillsides, we took a short hike to a cafe stop. Continuing on our Green Tour adventure we ended at the Selime Monastery, an astonishing rock-cut settlement used by monks, and subsequently used as a stopping place (caravanserai) on the Silk-Route.
The Hot Air Ballon took place the next day with Voyager Balloons. we had booked via our hotel, as the pilot was also the owner of the place we stayed: Göreme Mansion. It is definitely not a cheap activity but such an amazing adventure, flying over the fairy chimney stacks, looking out over the Göreme open-air museum, the valleys below, and out to Mount Erciyes were the sun was rising. We even celebrated with Champagne after landing.
Next was the Red Tour, but to save some money we did this ourselves with help from this article.

Hiking through Pigeon Valley we saw the small carvings for the homes of the pigeon, used in ancient times to deliver messages. Reaching Uchisar we headed to the castle, another spectacular rock-carved structure, with an amazing panoramic view of the region.
At this point, the illness experienced was starting to crawl back, so after lunch we headed back, the long way because you have to carry on with the adventure! In Love Valley we walked with the sun on our backs and somewhat downhill (the better way to do things). Luckily, as I was struggling, with illness and lack of water, some locals picking fruits at an orchard offered us some apples and grapes. My feet dragged me back to Göreme somehow, and we ended our time with a Vegetarian version of the local dish the Testi Kebab.
A great adventure in Cappdocia!
