Nijo Castle in Kyoto is a symbol of power of the Tokugawa Shogunate, ordered by the first Shogun, Ieyasu. Also on the grounds is the tranquil Ninomaru Garden. The beautiful Golden Pavilion (Rokuon-Ji Temple) was originally built as a retirement home for the Shogun but was converted into a temple by his son. It was burned down by a monk in 1950 and was rebuilt in 1955. It is covered with gold leaf.
