Humans have generated waste since pre-historic times, but it was the Victorians who first generated rubbish in large quantities.
In this 2017 UEA London Lecture, Dr Tom Licence (School of History) explained how the arrival of brands and packaged products led to the creation of a new waste stream consisting of glass, ceramic, metal and paper packaging. He explored how the Victorians learned to discard not only things that were broken, but also empty containers, in the earliest form of what some might consider our current 'throwaway' society.
