A group of around a hundred Palestinians threw stones at Israeli police and soldiers outside the West Bank city of Nablus on Thursday.
They were provoked by a group of 30 Jewish religious students who demonstrated earlier at the eastern entrance to the city.
The Israeli students wanted to visit Joseph's Tomb, a place of daytime study, but were stopped by Palestinian police.
Israeli soldiers took the brunt of the Palestinian's anger.
The confrontation outside Nablus was provoked by a group of Israeli students who had
tried to pass through the city.
The Palestinian crowd gathered, angered by the Israeli presence.
Israeli soldiers at first fired shots in the air to try and disperse the crowd with little effect.
Palestinian police also tried to hold back the stone throwers.
Earlier the crowd had clashed with the Israeli students who's bus had been prevented from passing through the city on the way to Joseph's Tomb, a place of daytime study.
A Palestinian police official said the Israeli student's bus was not allowed through because the students had smuggled scaffolding and other building materials into Joseph's Tomb.
The Palestinians asked for the materials be removed but the demand was refused leading to the arrest of two of the students.
