Ralph Gibson says that people shoot wide angles (usually with a 35mm lens) and horizontally because it's easier. Our binocular (stereoscopic) vision imposes a horizontal frame on us. But it is enough to close one eye and we see a single plumb line! A camera has one eye, so in his opinion vertical frames are more natural for the language of photography! For a man who is binocular, the vertical frame is more difficult, but perhaps more interesting, as an unusual way of seeing. It allows him to find their own shapes, their own forms in objects. Gibson says 90% of his photos are vertical! Ralph Gibson's "MONO" album is just the essence of his approach to framing.
