Tátry is the highest part of the Carpathians, located in Slovakia (3/4 of the area) and Poland, part of the Fatran-Tatra region. The highest point is Mount Gerlachovski-Shtit, 2655 meters. In the Tatras, there are 25 peaks over 2500 meters high.
Climate
The climate of the Tatras is similar to the Alpine one. It is characterized by frequent changes in weather conditions, significant temperature fluctuations, significant cloudiness and precipitation, mainly in the form of snow (in the highlands, even in summer). Snow cover persists until May-June (in some places it can persist all year round), strong winds of the western and south-western directions are frequent. Most weather events are associated with the passage of atmospheric fronts.
The absolute minimum and maximum temperatures at the top of Kasprowy Wierch (1970 meters above sea level) are, respectively, −39.5 ° C (February 1929) and +30.2 ° C (August 1943). The height of the snow cover in March reaches three meters; snow avalanches are frequent. In winter, temperature inversions are observed.
Tourism and nature conservation
Both the Slovak and Polish sides of the mountains are protected by the Slovak and Polish Tatra National Reserves (Tatranský národný park (TANAP) and Tatrzański Park Narodowy respectively), which have been cooperating since 1954. In 1993, the Tatras were included in the UNESCO list of biosphere reserves.

Lakes
The largest, Morskie Oko, with an area of 34.54 hectares, a depth of 50.8 m, an altitude of 1395.4 m, is located on the Polish side. The deepest is Velke Gintsovo-Pleso (20.08 ha, 53 m, 1946 m), located in Slovakia. Strbske Pleso and Popradske Pleso are popular among tourists.
Waterfalls
The most famous waterfalls are located on Studeny Potok. The largest, but not the highest, waterfall on the Polish side is Siklava. Its height is 64-70 m, the slope is about 35 °.
Flora and fauna
On the Slovak and Polish sides, there are nature reserves - Tatra National Parks, where there are many protected plant and animal species.
Settlements and recreation centers
On the territory of the High Tatras there is the only city - Vysoke Tatry, which is the base for excursions to the High Tatras.
Also in the mountains is the Shelter in the valley of the Five Polish Ponds, which provides protection from the weather.
